Why the Google My Business Marketing Kit is essential for your business

How often have you been looking for a service nearby, and missed the exact thing because it didn’t show up on Google Maps?

Mechanic near me

Spa near me

Restaurant near me …

Don’t be that business owner.

It’s easy to make sure your business is found, and then to make sure people buy from you, when you set up your Google My Business profile perfectly.

Your Google My Business (GMB) profile comes with excellent benefits:

  • With GMB your business will appear in Google Maps and Google Local Pack profiles.
  • It's highly visible
  • GMB provides a way for people to leave reviews about your business
  • GMB provides useful analytics that give insights into your business online
  • It's a free system that is easy to use

Even for our ecommerce clients, we create a GMB profile to increase their brand’s visibility online. While the primary purpose of a GMB profile is for local search, why not take advantage of that extra “billboard” that comes for free, and which you can link to your main site?

This post contains everything you need to get your GMB profile set up.

You’ll also find tips for optimizing your GMB profile so that you get the best out of it.

How to set up your Google My Business profile

What you’ll need before you begin

  1. Your computer - desktop will make this easier
  2. Your phone, and/or your email (for verification methods)
  3. Photos of your business, both inside and outside. If you run your business from home and don’t want to put images of your home, choose images related to your business. Make sure the images are high quality and give a good indication of what you do.
  4. Your full business details
  5. A list of your services, pricing, and images to illustrate those.

Set up your Google My Business profile

  1. Create a Google account: If you don't already have one, create a Google account so you can sign in to Google My Business. Make sure to use an email address that's associated with your business. Also, make sure the email address is one you check often, because it’s where you’ll receive alerts when people message your business.

  1. Go to Google My Business: Once you're logged in to your Google account, go to Google My Business by visiting the website https://www.google.com/business/. Click the "Start Now" button to get started.

  1. Add your business information: Follow the prompts to add your business name, address, phone number, website, category, and other relevant information. Make sure to use accurate and consistent information across all platforms.

  1. Verify your business: Google will ask you to verify your business by phone or mail. This helps ensure that your business information is accurate and prevents fraudulent profiles.

  1. Add photos and videos: To make your Google My Business profile more attractive and engaging, add high-quality photos and videos of your business, products, and services. This can help customers get a better sense of what you offer.

  1. Encourage customer reviews: Reviews can help boost your visibility on Google and attract new customers. Encourage your customers to leave reviews on your Google My Business profile by providing excellent service and asking for feedback.

  1. Respond to reviews: Responding to customer reviews shows that you care about their feedback and are committed to providing excellent service. Make sure to respond to both positive and negative reviews in a timely and professional manner.

  1. Monitor your insights: Google My Business provides valuable insights into how customers are finding and interacting with your business. Monitor your insights regularly to see what's working and what could be improved.

  1. Promote your Google My Business profile: Once your Google My Business profile is set up, promote it on your website, social media channels, and other marketing materials. This can help drive traffic and leads to your business.

  1. Check the settings on your Google My Business Profile, so that you get the alerts that matter to you. To get there, click on the three little dots to open the menu. From there you can edit the Business Profile Settings and check notifications. Here’s an example from one of our clients’ listings.

Add your services to your Google My Business profile so that you bring more sales

Adding your services to your Google My Business profile is a great way to let potential customers know what your business offers.

Here's how you can do it:

  1. Log in to your Google My Business account.
  2. Click on "Info" in the menu on the left-hand side of the screen.
  3. Scroll down to the "Services" section and click on the pencil icon to edit.
  4. Click on "Add a Service" and enter the name of the service you want to add.
  5. Select a category that best describes the service. You can choose from a list of predefined categories or create your own.
  6. Enter a description of the service. Be sure to include any relevant details, such as pricing, duration, or special features.
  7. Add a photo if you have one. This can help potential customers visualize the service you're offering.
  8. Click "Save" to add the service to your Google My Business profile.
  9. Repeat these steps to add additional services as needed.

Once you've added your services to your Google My Business profile, they will be visible to potential customers who search for your business on Google.

Make sure to keep your service information up to date and accurate to ensure the best possible experience for your customers.

Maintaining your Google My Business profile

Set a calendar reminder for, say, every three months, to go back and review your services and images.

Make sure you respond to reviews - Google will email you an alert at the email address associated with your Google My Business profile, telling you when you have a new review. Responding to reviews will help build engagement on your profile.

Even if the review is negative, keep in mind that other people are watching to see how you handle the situation. Respond to the review promptly and in a positive, respectful way. When people see how you handle a not-so-great situation well, they will build respect for your business.

Request reviews regularly. You can click here to use Google’s tips on different ways to request reviews.

Once you have a verified review, you can have that automatically sent to display on your own website using the no-code platform, Zapier. Click here to find Zapier’s ‘recipe’ for this.

Also, expect to get messages via your Google My Business profile, so do check the email address you use for the profile. Answering messages fast can make all the difference to your bottom line!

What to do if you get stuck

McKee Creative's team will set up your Google My Business profile for a flat fee of USD$500.

How does it work?

  1. You purchase the setup, by clicking here.
  2. We email you a briefing document so that you can share your business details, services and photos with us.
  3. Once we have the completed document, we have your profile created within 3 working days.
  4. Please note: Google’s verification process will require us to contact you for a phone or email confirmation. Sometimes Google wants to use a manual process, which means we have a postcard sent to your business address that contains a code, which you send to us to enter. Therefore the verification process can take as little as a day, or sometimes a few weeks.

How to supercharge your business revenue

As well as setting up your Google My Business profile, you want to create a consistent marketing system for your business.

If you make time to create 3-5 organic posts per day on Instagram and Facebook for a year, you will build up a good following and see sales come in. However the problem with that is that if you only ship to a certain region or country, it’s hard to only build followers from that area.

Instead you will find that a paid ad strategy allows you to target the locations and demographics you serve.

Create a system that spreads your risk (relying on paid ads can be problematic in itself) by building:

~ Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

~ Email marketing, to new and existing customers

~ publishing weekly blog posts on your website to build authority, so that Google sends more visitors your way

~ amplify your efforts with paid ads on Facebook/Instagram and Google. Some business find TikTok is a good fit too, but we always recommend starting with the Facebook/Instagram + Google combo. Meta’s system is excellent for helping people discover new products, while Google ads are perfect for scooping up buyers who want exactly what you provide, now.
