Why most Google Ads campaigns fail (and how to fix them for maximum ROI)
For many small businesses, Google Ads promises quick wins, but the reality often falls short. Poor targeting, wasted budgets, and lack of strategic planning leave entrepreneurs frustrated and wondering if the platform is worth the investment. But when Google Ads is combined with a well-rounded marketing system, the results can be transformative.
Take one of my clients, a small business transitioning off Amazon to reduce reliance on third-party platforms. Using my all-in-one marketing system, which includes paid ads, email marketing, blog content, and organic posts, we scaled their revenue while maintaining a 3x return on ad spend (ROAS). Here’s how we did it—and how your business can achieve similar results.
Why most Google Ads campaigns fail
- Misaligned Targeting
Many campaigns fail because they target the wrong audience or use overly broad keywords. Without refining who sees your ads, businesses often pay for clicks that never convert. - Ineffective Landing Pages
Even with great ads, weak landing pages can kill conversions. Poor design, irrelevant content, or a lack of a clear call-to-action (CTA) leads visitors to bounce instead of buy. - Lack of Strategy for Scaling
Scaling Google Ads isn’t just about increasing budgets. Without careful tracking and strategic adjustments, scaling often leads to diminishing returns. - Ignoring Complementary Marketing Channels
Google Ads works best as part of a holistic strategy. Businesses relying solely on ads often miss out on email marketing and organic content, which reduce customer acquisition costs and build long-term loyalty.
How to fix these issues (and achieve a 3x ROAS)
- Combine Paid Ads with Organic Growth
The secret to my client’s success wasn’t just in running better ads—it was building a marketing ecosystem. Alongside their Google Ads campaigns, we created a growing library of SEO-focused blog posts to attract organic traffic and social media content to engage their audience. This not only diversified their traffic sources but also nurtured potential customers before they clicked on an ad. - Optimize Landing Pages for Conversions
Every click matters when you’re running Google Ads. We overhauled their landing pages, focusing on speed, relevance, and clear CTAs. This helped convert visitors into customers more consistently. - Strategic Email Marketing
Once customers clicked, we ensured the relationship didn’t end there. Automated email sequences captured leads and encouraged repeat purchases. For this client, email marketing became a powerful driver of incremental revenue. - Precision in Scaling Campaigns
We didn’t just throw more money at Google Ads. Instead, we refined targeting, introduced negative keywords, and scaled the campaigns that were already profitable. This approach ensured a consistent 3x ROAS.
Success story: from Amazon dependence to scaled revenue
When this small business approached me, they were heavily reliant on Amazon sales, a risky dependency they wanted to move away from. By implementing my all-in-one marketing system, we achieved remarkable results:
- 3x ROAS on Google Ads: Careful campaign management and scaling led to consistent profitability.
- Diversified Traffic Sources: Organic blog content brought in traffic that didn’t require ad spend, while organic social media posts helped build trust and community.
- Email Marketing for Retention: Repeat customers drove up their customer lifetime value, reducing the need for constant acquisition spending.
Today, they’ve de-risked their business, increased profitability, and built a foundation for long-term growth.
How to achieve these results for your business
If your Google Ads campaigns aren’t delivering, or if you’re tired of relying on a single channel like Amazon, it’s time to rethink your strategy. My all-in-one marketing system combines Google Ads, email marketing, organic content, and social media to create a reliable, scalable engine for growth.

I work fast. Within the first month of me starting work, you’ll have a clear idea of whether you want me to continue. Refer back to the Funsquare notes for a reminder of what I do within the first 30 days.
What kind of reporting will I get?I’ve used the fancy reporting software, but found there was too much impersonal data for my clients. So, each week I make a campaign update with notes and screenshots of every facet of your brand that I’m working on.
Some of my clients like to do a zoom call each week.
Others prefer a monthly call with weekly notes in between.
And one dear client usually forgets to come to their monthly call, after 7 years of working with me 😉
When we do our onboarding zoom call, you can let me know what works best for you.
The key is to make sure you know what is happening, and why.
Do I get access to the ad accounts you use?YES. I believe you are paying for the data in your ad accounts. It becomes a valuable business asset.
So, I’ll get you to add me to your existing ad accounts.
If you don’t have an ad account I’m happy to set it up and will make sure you are an admin/owner of each accoun
How often are you working on my business during a month?I’m reviewing your sales (via your website dashboard) and ad accounts daily. Actually, often a few times daily.
First, I feel better knowing things are flowing, so if something’s wrong with your site I’ll pick it up fast and can help you fix it (brands using WooCommerce, particularly, love this … they can have sooo many plugin conflicts 😉
I also want to make sure all is well in each paid account, so no bugs get left unattended.
Search terms need to be trimmed in Google Ads, fresh ads need to go into FB/Insta as often as the ad budget allows, and there are endless opportunities for creative and landing page testing.
Regarding deep work, I commit a full day each week to reviewing you Google Search Console, Google Analytics, Website and Email data, as well as the paid platforms. I then create the blog(s) and email(s) for the week, and sometimes throw in some organic posts for good measure (extra; time depending).
Do you make the ad copy and creative?Yes, using brand assets (product images and videos) that you supply.
I reformat for each platform’s size requirements, and repurpose to extend the impact of your assets (swapping backgrounds, making gifs/videos etc)
Regarding ad copy, that comes naturally. At one point over 80 other agencies were coming to me for ad copy as a bit of a side hustle (https://youradsondemand.com), to have me write copy for their own client campaigns, in all niches.
Do I get locked into a contract?No.
I prefer my clients to stick around because they’re happy with the work.
I do ask that if you want to end our agreement, you provide 30 days’ notice.
That gives me the chance to tidy things up for a handover to the next person you hire and to answer questions you may have.
